Join us for the second screening in our film series featuring the Oscar-nominated documentary Sugarcane, followed by a discussion and Q&A with California Institute for Community, Art & Nature Executive Director Claire Greensfelder and special guest, co-director Julian Brave NoiseCat.
An epic cinematic portrait of resilience, Sugarcane follows a groundbreaking investigation into abuse and death at an Indian residential school. The film empowers participants to break cycles of intergenerational trauma by bearing witness to painful, long-ignored truths—and the love that endures within their families despite the revelation of genocide. (But it’s really a reverse Western buddy stoner road trip tragicomedy.)
California I CAN is honored to be partnering with our longtime colleagues and friends at the Sacred Land Film Project and the David Brower Center to present the Native Voices Film Series.
The inaugural screening in the series celebrates the 25th anniversary of Sacred Land Film Project and director Toby McLeod’s film In the Light of Reverence, a groundbreaking documentary that explores the profound, living relationship between Indigenous Peoples and their sacred lands. This first screening will be this Friday, August 14, 2026, at the David Brower Center in Downtown Berkeley. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Film Director Toby McLeod and special guest Corrina Gould (Ohlone), tribal spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan.
