Julian Brave NoiseCat and the 2019 Alcatraz Canoe Journey

Julian Brave NoiseCat is a spring of cultural renaissance, and he’s currently working on a spectacular project. Each year in the Pacific Northwest, hundreds of boats are taken to the local waterways to participate in the Tribal Canoe Journey, a beautiful display of native art and culture. In the summer of 2019, a special Tribal Canoe Journey will take place in the San
Francisco Bay in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Occupation of Alcatraz Island.

We wanted to lend Julian a helping hand, so we threw a reception to get him in touch with some of our friends. The Bay ties together many kinds of people from different communities, all of which will be touched by the 2019 Canoe Journey. We invited museum folks, people who live on houseboats in the Bay, local Californian Indians, representatives from environmental organizations, and whoever else might have something to offer for this project. Folks there vibrantly found ways in which they could relate their own work and connections to this project.

An update, contact information and an invitation to participate from Julian:

“Our Alcatraz Canoe Journey 2019 team, comprising youth, elders and everyone in between is currently identifying a viable journey route, securing encampments and creating opportunities for local youth to take to the waters of San Francisco Bay. Building upon the shared understanding that water is life, coming together inclusively and carrying forward the vision of a meaningful indigenous presence on the waters of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Canoe Journey 2019 welcomes all who are interested to participate in our vision, our organizing and our event.
