Center for Berkeley Studies/Berkeley Programs
No other modern city the size of Berkeley has contributed so much to the world’s environmental awareness, civil liberties, social justice, publishing, writing, and the arts. What has made Berkeley so hospitable to creativity and innovation? Why in these generally discouraging times does a stream of utopian idealism still infuse much of Berkeley life, informing personal decisions and civic actions alike? And as Berkeley changes, how do we keep that spirit alive? California ICAN is launching the Center for Berkeley Studies in its own hometown, starting with the following projects.
A Fresh Look at Berkeley
California ICAN is assembling a collection of fiction and nonfiction writings from Berkeley’s past and present.
Sixties Museum, Cultural Center, and Historical Society
We are planning several events to involve us in a thoughtful and creative exploration of Berkeley. They will include intimate discussion groups, salons, lectures, seminars, courses, multi-day programs, conferences, and even festivals.
